Mid - Autumn festival is one of the biggest festival in a year of Vietnamese people. It is organized every year in the middle of August (15 /8 of Lunar Calendar). From the past, it is the festival of Autumn, but then, becoming a festival which can be called as a night for "watching Moon" for children. On this day, the moon is round and beautiful, the weather is cool, can be said that the most perfect day in a year. Not only in Vietnam, some Asian countries also celebrate this day such as: China, Japan, Philippines, Thailand…
To prepare for this festival, Vietnamese people must to prepare all things a few days or even some weeks before. Some special things for this festival as: Moon cake (a kind of tender pastry, include two types, one is served steamed and one is fried. In common, there is an egg inside which is the symbol of Moon). Another important thing is lantern. The most common shape for this lantern is star, with colourful paper. The children will bring a lantern, queue up a line and sing, dance, laugh together on the alley, the street also. Or even, in somewhere, they organize a competition of making lantern. Which one is the most beautiful, special and biggest will be the winner. One more activity in this festival which expected by the children is "dragon dancing". With this activity, local people also give the best performance to choose the best team.
Mid – Autumn Festival also called "Gathering Festival". Because, on this day, Vietnamese people in family will stop working, spend time to have happy seconds with their family and pray the ancestor for happiness, luckiness and health. With this meaning, Mid – Autumn has become one of the biggest festival in Vietnam.
